EAS356   War and Peace in East Asia   (20 credits)

Description

This module examines the major theories in International Relations and Security Studies within the context of East Asia: exploring the idea of security and how it has evolved over time; identifying the structures, actors, and ideas shaping security dynamics in the region; and assessing historical and contemporary threats to the security of both states and peoples. We shall consider the historical legacies of the Second World War and foreign intervention and peace-building initiatives. Attention will focus on a number of case studies including North Korea, maritime security, intervention in Cambodia and Timor Leste, human and environmental security, and international terrorism. This module is aimed mainly at students who have taken modules in either politics/international relations of specifically China/Japan/Korea or more general politics and international relations at previous levels.
